TASK 2: Recycling

This is a task specially designed to be done with technologies, about recycling. The aim is children to acquire basic knowledge in the recycling principles and (by the end) to be able to show evidence and criteria when recycling.

The target students of the activities are children in the second cycle (3rd grade) of Primary Education. For activities are put forward:

1. Understanding recycling. This activity uses a freeware: "Scratch" and is designed for children to understand the basic recycling rules. Firstly, each of the rubbish bins are introduced and they are told the materials corresponding to each of them. After that, they have to practice by throwing each material to its corresponding bin.

2. Recycling vocabulary. It is an activity using an online tool: "quizlet". The aim of this activity is that children learn vocabulary related to recycling. With this tool they are provided learning opportunities, since quizlet offers plenty of games and resources to help learning take place.

The website offers different kind of activities: flashcards, learn (quiz in which they have to write each word), speller (they should type what they hear), test, scatter (matching game), race (they have to write the word before it desappears). This tool can be used in different ways, and the activities to be carried out in class depend on the teacher, according to the resources in the classroom.
The teacher may choose to study the words in class by using the flashcards and tell students to at home revise them playing with the different games.

Next, the links to each of the activities are provided

3. Recycling mindmap. In this activity children, in small groups, are told to create a mindmap gathering the ideas of both of the previous activities. We have chosen the tool: "popplet", since it has an intuitive managment and enables to include pictures in the mindmap. If they do not have previous knowledge in how to manage this tool, they may need previous explanation that will automatically appear in the program either when creating their first popplet or when trying the demo. They will also need to create an account if they need to save the file.

If creating an account results controversial, it might be suitable to create the popplet by using the demo and saving it as a picture, using the screenshoot option in the computer.

We attach an example of a possible mindmap created by students:

4. Recycling song. Finally, children, in groups, will have to create a song about the topic. In order to do so, the teacher will provide them with a video.
This video, considering the time in the classroom might be limited, can be created by the teacher. In case the time is enough and the target students are considered capable to create it themselves, they can use Movie Maker in order to do so, by selecting certain pictures and the music.

Once the video is ready, they will use "Dotsub" to add the lyrics of the song, as if it was a karaoke. Next, we provide and example with the initial captions of the video included.
